How to build Biltmore Estate in Minecraft

America's largest house in pale limestone under steep blue-grey slate roofs with copper cresting. The open spiral Grand Staircase tower climbs beside the carved entrance, the Banquet Hall holds its triple fireplace, banners and organ, the two-storey Library has a balcony gallery, and the glass-roofed Winter Garden sits behind the entrance hall. Out front the long esplanade lawn runs to the Rampe Douce and the statue of Diana, with the Italian Garden pools to the east and the Blue Ridge Mountains behind.

Building tips

  1. Lay out the ground plan first: the 49-block main range, the library pavilion to the west and the Banquet Hall and stable wing to the east. Everything else hangs off those walls.
  2. The roofs are steep: two layers up for every block in, with a full block below and a stair above. Build the eaves ring first and step inward; it goes fast once the rhythm sets in.
  3. For the staircase tower, mark the spiral bands of glass on the curved wall before building the stairs inside. Each band climbs about six blocks per half turn.
  4. Light blue terracotta is the closest thing to Biltmore's blue-grey slate, and cut copper on the ridges reads as the copper cresting from the ground.
  5. Glowstone set into the floors behind the windows makes the whole facade glow at night, like the house during the Christmas candlelight evenings.
  6. Leave the mountains for last. Build them as a thin skin of blocks over a few ridge lines, darker green near the house and hazy blue-grey at the back.
