How to build Ghostbusters Firehouse in Minecraft

Hook & Ladder 8, the Tribeca firehouse that became Ghostbusters headquarters. The three-storey Beaux-Arts front has a rusticated stone ground floor, a big arched garage door, red brick above with arched windows, stone keystones and a heavy cornice, and the red-and-white no-ghost sign hangs over the entrance. The Ecto-1 is parked at the kerb with its roof rack and beacons. Inside are Janine's desk, the brass fire pole, the upstairs lounge and bunk room, and the containment unit glowing red in the basement. Slimer hovers out front while the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man peers over the roof.

Building tips

  1. Build the ground floor in alternating rows of polished andesite and stone bricks. The striped rustication makes it read as heavy stone under the brick upper floors.
  2. Recess every window one block behind the facade. The shadow in the reveal adds a lot of depth to a flat brick wall.
  3. Make the arched windows from a 3-wide opening with one extra glass block centred on top, then frame the top corners in smooth stone and put a chiseled keystone above.
  4. Lay out the no-ghost sign on the ground first: a red ring 11 blocks across, the ghost in white with a black outline, then the red slash from top-left to bottom-right over everything.
  5. The Ecto-1 is only four blocks tall, so the details matter: red fins at the back, a red stripe along the side, black glass all round and a cluttered roof rack with beacons on top.
  6. Stay Puft is three hollow egg shapes (legs, body, head) plus a sailor hat. Build him behind the firehouse so only his head, collar and hands show over the roofline.
  7. Hang lanterns from the street lamps and set glowstone in the ceilings. At night the windows, beacons and the red containment lights glow.
