How to build Hearst Castle in Minecraft

William Randolph Hearst's hilltop castle above the Pacific. Casa Grande rises in white stucco and carved stone to twin Spanish-cathedral bell towers with blue tiled domes and a carved teak cornice between them. Below it the terraced gardens step down past cypresses, palms and the guest houses Casa del Sol and Casa del Mar. On its own terrace the Neptune Pool reflects a Roman temple front and curving colonnades, and under the tennis courts the indoor Roman Pool glows in cobalt blue and gold.

Building tips

  1. Shape the hill first: the top terrace, the garden terrace three blocks lower, the Neptune terrace seven blocks down and the slope to the beach. The retaining walls fall out of the level changes.
  2. The towers are plain shafts up to the cornice; all the drama is in the belfries and domes. Build one tower completely, then copy it to the other side.
  3. Use brick stairs for the red tile roofs. A ring of stairs per layer, stepping in one block each time, gives the low Spanish pitch.
  4. Light the Neptune Pool with sea lanterns on the pool floor and the water glows turquoise at night.
  5. For the Roman Pool, line every wall, column and the ceiling in blue concrete and set gold blocks in bands and stars. It only works if you commit to the blue.
  6. Italian cypresses are just a stack of spruce leaves one block wide with a wider base. Line the walkways with them.
