How to build Stilt Fishing Village in Minecraft

A Southeast Asian fishing village standing on tall stilts over a turquoise lagoon. Six woven-bamboo houses with steep hay-thatch roofs and painted shutters are linked by plank boardwalks on bamboo poles, strung with lanterns that light the whole village at Night. Steps lead down to a floating market raft piled with mangoes, limes, bananas, dragon fruit and rambutans under striped awnings, with fruit-laden sampans tied alongside. Longtail boats with ribboned bows and long engine shafts are moored at the walkways, bamboo fish weirs and a heart-shaped trap stand in the shallows, nets dry on poles, and on the sand spit a white-and-gold temple and chedi sit among leaning palm trees, all under a backdrop of jungle-topped limestone karst towers.

Building tips

1. Shade the lagoon floor first: sand and white near the spit, light blue in the middle and cyan towards the edge. Top the shallows with light blue stained glass, the middle with cyan stained glass and use real water only out at the reef edge. (In a warm-ocean biome real water is already turquoise, so there you can use water everywhere.)
2. Set every house floor and every boardwalk at the same height. Use top slabs for the walkways so their walking surface lines up with the house floors.
3. Tall stilts look best thin: put logs at the house corners and bamboo-style jungle fences everywhere else, all the way down to the lagoon floor.
4. Checkerboard birch and jungle planks for a woven-bamboo wall, and frame each window with two blocks of painted concrete as open shutters.
5. Make the thatch roofs steep: every step in rises two blocks, a birch stair on top of a hay bale, so the slope reads as straw. Cross two bamboo poles over each end of the ridge.
6. For the strings of lanterns, stand fence posts on the railing, join them with a line of fence along the top and hang lanterns underneath every few blocks.
7. A longtail boat is three blocks wide and twelve long: keep the hull at the waterline, raise the bow with fence posts and coloured ribbons, and run iron bars out of the engine at the back for the long-tail shaft.
