How to build Fantasy Castle in Minecraft

A storybook castle straight off a theme-park postcard. Slender white towers climb to blue and purple needle spires with gold tips, turrets sprout from the walls at every height, and a soaring central tower tops out over 70 blocks up. A curtain wall with four corner towers rings a raised inner court, the gatehouse drops a drawbridge over the moat, flags fly from the tallest spires and every window glows.

Building tips

  1. Build from the outside in: moat, curtain wall and corner towers, then the terrace, the keep and finally the tall towers. The spires go on last.
  2. Each spire is a stack of shrinking circles. Flare the first ring one block wider than the tower, then pull in faster near the top so it ends in a long needle.
  3. Vary the heights. No two towers should end at the same level, which is what makes it feel like a fairy tale rather than a fort.
  4. Small turrets that start halfway up a wall need an upside-down cone of quartz underneath (a corbel) so they look supported.
  5. Use glowstone and lit redstone lamps for the windows so the castle sparkles at night.
  6. Stripe the spires with a lighter band every few rows and add a gold block at every tip.
  7. The raised inner court is only a retaining wall with grass on top, so the plan leaves it hollow. Fill it with dirt or stone if you prefer.
