How to build Hobbiton in Minecraft

The Shire, cosy and green. Hobbit holes are dug into rolling hills, each with a perfectly round painted door, a brass knob, round windows, a stone-walled garden bursting with flowers and a picket fence. Bag End sits high on the Hill under the great Party Tree, and its hillside is cut away so you can see the round tunnel rooms inside: the parlour with its fireplace, a pantry stuffed with food, and the study with Bilbo's map. Down by the millpond the old mill's waterwheel stands beside the double-arched bridge to the Green Dragon inn.

Building tips

1. Shape the hills first, a few layers at a time, and keep the slopes gentle: never more than one block of rise between neighbours except where you cut a garden into the hill.
2. Cut each garden flat into the slope and face the cut with mossy cobblestone. The round door sits in that face one block deep, so its frame casts a little shadow.
3. A round door is just a 5×5 square with the top corners missing. Put a single gold block in the middle for the brass knob.
4. Put glowstone behind the yellow stained glass windows. At night every hole in the Shire glows warmly from inside.
5. For the Bag End cutaway, build the three tunnel rooms first, then bring the hill over them and slice it flat along the front so you can look in.
6. Build the waterwheel as a separate ring of planks with eight paddles and an axle into the mill wall. Dig the stream one block deeper under it so the paddles dip into the water.
7. Scatter poppies, dandelions and cornflowers thickly. A hobbit garden is never tidy.
