How to build Tudor Cottage in Minecraft

A storybook English Tudor cottage. White lime-washed walls are crossed with dark oak timbers: close studding on the ground floor, braced panels and chevrons up in the gables. Steep slate roofs meet in a valley over a jettied front gable whose upper floor hangs out over the garden on carved brackets, with a little oriel window poking out further still. Two tall brick chimneys rise above the ridge, leaded windows have flower boxes, climbing roses scramble up the walls and a rose arbor gate in a mossy stone wall opens onto a stone path through a riot of cottage flowers. Inside: a parlour with an inglenook fireplace, a kitchen with a cooking hearth, a dining table, a staircase and two bedrooms under the eaves.

Building tips

1. Build the timber frame first in dark oak, then fill the gaps with white. Close studding (a dark post every second block) on the ground floor and big braced panels upstairs is the classic Tudor mix.
2. A real Tudor roof is steep. Put a full slate block under every stair so each step rises two blocks for every block it moves in. Where two roofs cross, fill the valley underneath with solid blocks so you cannot see into the attic.
3. The jetty is what makes it look Tudor: run the upper-floor beam one block past the ground-floor wall and build the upper wall on its end. Upside-down stairs under the beam look like carved brackets.
4. Leaded windows: leave the dark studs in as mullions and put glass panes only in the white gaps. An upside-down stair under each window with flowers on top makes a window box.
5. Chimneys should be tall and chunky: a wide base, stepped shoulders, then a narrow stack that clears the ridge by two or three blocks with wall blocks on top for chimney pots.
6. Climbing roses are leaves with a few red blocks mixed in, hugging the wall and the arbor. In the real game sweet berry bushes or rose bushes at the foot of the wall finish the effect.
