How to build Wilson's Desert Island in Minecraft

A lonely little island in the middle of nowhere, straight out of Cast Away. A single palm tree leans over a leafy lean-to shelter, a campfire crackles on the sand ("Look what I have created!"), HELP is spelled out in big grey rocks on the beach and a scrappy log raft with a grey sail waits at the shore. Sitting on the beach is Wilson, the volleyball with the red handprint face, blown up to giant size so he can keep an eye on everything. A small Wilson rides on the raft, and a couple of unopened parcels are stacked in the shelter.

Open the interactive 3D plan above to build it one layer at a time: every layer has a numbered top-down plan, a block list and full-screen step-by-step instructions you can tick off as you go. You can also download it for Litematica, WorldEdit or Minecraft Bedrock, or view it in your room in AR.

Building tips

  1. Start with the water. Lay a flat sand sea floor, cover it with one layer of water, then build the island on top as two or three oval layers of sand, each smaller than the one below.
  2. Wilson is a ball of white concrete 9 blocks across. Paint the face onto the front-most blocks: four red fingers on top, a solid red palm, and leave two white gaps for eyes and a wide one for the mouth.
  3. Spell HELP with mixed cobblestone, stone and andesite so it looks like real rocks. Each letter is 3 blocks wide with a 1 block gap. Lay it flat on the sand where it can be seen from the sky.
  4. Lean the palm trunk by stepping it one block sideways every three blocks up. Droop the fronds: go out two blocks, then down one and out two more.
  5. The campfire is real fire on a block of cobblestone inside a ring of slabs. Fire and lanterns make the island glow at Night, which is when it looks loneliest.
