How to build Cozy Log Cabin in Minecraft

A rustic first home that looks great from day one. Oak log walls with dark spruce corner posts sit on a cobblestone footing under a steep spruce roof, with a chunky stone chimney up one end. Out front a covered porch holds two pairs of rocking chairs, flower boxes sit under the windows, a woodpile is stacked against the side and a lantern-lit path leads to the door. Inside there is everything you need for your first nights: a bed, crafting table, furnaces, chests and a crackling fireplace.

Building tips

  1. Gather first: about 3 stacks of spruce logs (two big spruce trees), a stack of cobblestone and a stack of spruce planks. Craft the stairs and slabs for the roof from planks as you go.
  2. Lay the cobblestone footing first, then raise the log walls 4 high. Leave the window and door gaps as you go: it is much easier than breaking them out later.
  3. The roof is plain stairs stepping up one block per row from both long sides. Let it hang one block past the walls so the eaves throw a shadow; that one overhang is what makes it look cosy.
  4. The porch roof is a single row of slabs on fence posts. Rocking chairs are just stairs facing out with a top slab between them for a side table.
  5. The fireplace fire burns on netherrack in the real game. Early on, a lit campfire or a furnace in the hearth gives the same glow. Never put fire next to wood: the hearth is cobblestone all round.
  6. Light it up so mobs stay away: lanterns on fence posts every 3 blocks along the path, two under the porch roof and two hanging inside. If you have no iron for lanterns yet, torches work just as well.
