How to build Stonehenge in Minecraft

The great prehistoric stone circle on grassy downland. A ring of grey sarsen uprights capped with lintels, five giant trilithons in a horseshoe opening to the north-east, little bluestones, fallen and toppled stones, the altar stone in the middle and the lonely heel stone out on the avenue, all ringed by a low earth bank and a visitor path.

Open the interactive 3D plan above to build it one layer at a time: every layer has a numbered top-down plan, a block list and full-screen step-by-step instructions you can tick off as you go. You can also download it for Litematica, WorldEdit or Minecraft Bedrock, or view it in your room in AR.

Building tips

  1. Mark the circle on the ground first: stake out a ring of dirt path, then stand the uprights on it. Getting the circle right matters more than any single stone.
  2. Mix stone, andesite, cobblestone and a little mossy cobblestone at random as you place each stone. The patchy grey looks thousands of years old.
  3. Each sarsen upright is 2 blocks thick and 4 tall. Leave a 1–2 block gap, then run the lintels across the tops to join neighbours.
  4. Leave gaps on the south-west side and lay a few stones on their sides. A ruin looks more real than a perfect ring.
  5. The open end of the horseshoe points along the avenue to the heel stone. Line them up and you have your sunrise view.
