How to build Tuscan Villa in Minecraft

A golden-hour villa on a Tuscan hilltop. Ochre stucco walls with green shutters, low terracotta tile roofs with deep eaves, and a rough stone tower with an open belfry and a bronze bell. An arched loggia runs along the front with a balcony above it, a vine-covered pergola shades a long dining table set for dinner, and an infinity pool spills over the edge of the top terrace. Below, a gravel drive climbs between two lines of tall cypresses past an olive grove, lavender beds and rows of vines heavy with grapes. Inside: a beamed living room with a big stone fireplace, a farmhouse kitchen, bedrooms upstairs and a ladder up the tower.

Building tips

1. Build the hill first as three terraces: the vineyard at ground level, the olive grove three blocks up and the house plateau four more blocks up. Face each step with a rough mix of cobblestone, stone and mossy cobblestone so it looks like a dry-stone wall.
2. There are no terracotta stairs, so acacia stairs and slabs make the roof tiles; their orange-brown matches orange terracotta, which fills the ridges. Alternate a ring of stairs with a ring of slabs one block higher to get the low Tuscan pitch.
3. Mix in a few white terracotta blocks with the yellow terracotta walls, so the stucco looks sun-faded instead of painted.
4. Loggia arches: square stone piers, then upside-down sandstone stairs at the top corners of each opening to round them off. Repeat the bay four times.
5. Cypresses are a plus-shaped column of spruce leaves seven to ten blocks tall with one block on top. Plant them in a strict line every four blocks along both sides of the drive.
6. For the infinity edge, let the pool water run right to the edge of the terrace and hang a sheet of water down the retaining wall into a trough below.
7. Put lanterns along the pergola beams and sea lanterns in the pool floor: at night the dinner table and the pool glow against the dark hill.
